saturday night special

How did you spend last Saturday night?  Romantic dinner? Movie? Chilling with familly? Hanging out with friends?

Come take a peak inside my Saturday night.  Be forewarned.  This post is not for the weak of heart …

And yes.  That is a glass of wine.  I operated not-to-heavy machinery under the influence of Pinot Grigio.  Hey, it was Saturday night.

Here’s the back story:  two years ago I offered to help with costumes for my child’s elementary school annual Tea Dance.  I figured I’d be making some ruffled skirts with elastic waists …

I certainly did not figure on this …

I’m afraid, at that time, I may have oversold my seamstress skills … or perhaps they were in awe of the fact that I actually owned a sewing machine … but up until that point, my sewing consisted of pillows and curtains.

And I found myself not only making that fancy dress … but making custom adjustments to said fancy dress to show less skin … oh, and they wanted a different bottom … and I had to make 15 … working off a sheet of paper with the girl’s measurements … gulp.

So why didn’t I tell the dance committee that this was way over my head?  Because the minute I step inside that school, with those oh so familiar cinderblock walls, I turn right back into that straight-A-teacher-pleaser student …

Needless to say, the holiday season that year was a blur of teal and sequins and thread and bobbins …

Last year, I was called in again.  This time pre-made dresses that were ordered from Forever 21 did not fit.  Some girls were swimming in fabric.  Other’s couldn’t get the dress over their heads.  This was two days before the dance.  A panic call from the teacher.  A rush to the school.  Cutting up the too-big dresses and creating panels for the too-small dresses.  A one-day whirlwind of satin and tulle …

Fast forward to this year.  Right before the holiday break. A panic call. The dresses I made two years ago number 15.  The girls in the class number 17.  Could there possibly be enough fabric remaining to make two more?  And those sequined gloves?  We need more of them too ... and the original dresses, could you make some repairs on them?

Yes. And yes. And yes.

So in-between picking a paint color and trying to figure out how to paint that vaulted ceiling in my master bedroom, I’ve been slowly, slowly working on these …

Talk about imaging an impossibility …

It all culminates at a January 31 multi-blog link party.  Stay tuned for more …

  5. My Mum use to make me outfits for balls and discos and I never appreciated it much at the time, but all these years on I do. Considering I can't even sew a button back, doing complete costumes is a huge effort.
I'd suggest drinking straight from the bottle next time :)

  6. They really went all out on the costumes didn't they? Great job on making the dresses and the alterations. I have a friend who did the same for her daughters dance class, hand sewing on a zillion sequins. I don't know if I'd have the patience - not at the moment anyway.
