it’s an anthropologie inspired cinch

What does it say about me that when I walk into a store like Anthropologie …

(and, yes, I have a brick and mortar Anthropologie within walking distance of my home)

... that instead of focusing on the fabulous merchandise, I’m drawn to this display ...

Anthropologie_paint_drip_mason_jars_in_store_display_collage

And the silly that is me I pick up one of the jars to look for the price tag.  And then … and only then … do I realize this is not for sale.  It’s a prop.  Part of the display.

* and now picture me clunking my forehead with my open palm *

And when I leave I cannot stop thinking about that Anthropologie display. Those paint drip mason jars stay with me.  They haunt me.  So I Google "Anthropologie paint drip mason jars" when I get home … you know, to find all those re-creation tutorials out in blog land …

… and I find two.  This one and this one that I proceeded to pin on this Pinterest board ...

Huh?

* and picture me clunking my forehead with my open palm again *

Only two?  I expected to find hundreds upon hundreds of blog posts about this.  Because I’m never ever ahead of the curve.  On top of the trends.  I’m typically trailing behind.  Far, far behind …

(and it never ever occurs to me that perhaps there are so few blog posts or tutorials because this project is just not trendy or cool or ahead of the curve ...)

So I forge ahead (thinking I'm way too cool) and enlist the help of my daughter for this super cinchy project.  We grab some Prego jars that I’ve been saving ...

... because, like pallets, the ever so popular mason jars elude me; I do not know where I would find these seemingly cheap and plentiful jars …

… and we grab the paint we used to make our birch tree painting.  And we add a bit of water to the paint so that it will pour easily …

DSCN9019 (600x450) DSCN9021 (600x450)

… and then we pour the paint into the bottom of the jars and turn the jar upside down so the paint runs and drips; and we twist it and turn it again and again …

DSCN9023 (600x450) DSCN9025 (600x450)

… and then we layer more colors by pouring it in slowly and carefully along the top lip of the jar ...

DSCN9029 (600x450) DSCN9030 (600x450)

… and we repeat our pours around the lip of the jar until my daughter gives it her super sneaky smile of approval.

And then we put them on our fabulous screen porch and click away …

And when all was said and done, my favorite jar is my daughter’s blue and white design on the left …

And the very best part of this super cinchy project?  Unlike Anthropologie -- who probably paid a steep sum of money to some high priced stylist to make all those pretty paint drip jars -- this project cost me zero dollars.

That’s right …
… Nothing …
…  Nada.

Now I’m not the only one who put together a cinchy project this weekend.  That’s right.  Me and some of my blog friends had ourselves a “virtual” crafting party.  So be sure to check out their super simple cinchy projects (just click on the pics to be transported to easy peasy fabulous-ness) …

  7. I can't wait to try this one! So easy, yet cool! They kind of remind me of the old wax dripped wine bottles. Thanks for the inspiration!

  10. Pretty. Nice smearage!

We've been scaling down and trying to be a bit of materialistic rustic. So, plain ball jar with tea lights for me. :)

  11. Okay, that's spell-check!

I was trying to type "Minimalistic Rustic."
    Not Materialistic...lol.

    Sorta the opposite, d'oh!

  12. I love easy projects! I just made outdoor candle holders with those same Prego jars!

  13. I actually prefer yours to the anthro ones, which probably would've cost $50 each if they were for sale. (And I am WITH you on the elusive nature of pallets and mason jars. Is there some top-secret source we're unaware of?)

  14. So cute, bright and cheerful! I love them!

  15. Fabulous! And the price...even better! xo

  16. Linda...these jars are great!...Even this DIY challenged person could tackle that project....I am definitely going to make these for an upcoming dinner party....I think they would not only look great on the table, but would make great giveaway/takeaway gifts for my guests....I so love them!!!....

  18. *gasp* and now I'm clunking my head into my palm because my daughter told me about these but she didn't get a picture! So you just saved me a trip (and $$$ too since I don't have to go to Anthro to look at them!) I've got to get busy making them now!

  25. So cute! They make a great display! I have a baby shower coming up and that might be my centerpiece...her colors are gray and magenta (???) and I've been yanking on my hair to try and think what to do for this funky, contemporary gal......Anthropologie is perfect! Thanks!

  30. Anthropologie within walking distance? How many times a week do you visit? How often do they change their displays? What happens to all that goodness? Any idea where they take things that don't sell? I lOVE Anthro, but of course the closest one is 2 1/2 hours away.

I love your jars, and the fact that you used old Prego ones instead of old Mason jars. It would be a shame to permanently paint those IMO. If we ever have a chance to meet, I will bring you some jars. My mom and mother-in-law probably have hundreds of them!

  31. These are really cool looking. What a great idea.

  37. I can't believe that something this simple to make yourself is sold for big bucks! Good for you for making them instead of shelling out, Linda! Is there anything mason jars can't do? :)

  40. love, love, love. and i have to say, i like yours a lot more. the colors work really well (plus, i just love blue). you aren't the only one that mason jars elude ... i can never find them anywhere except walmart - and something about buying them brand new just ruins the fun for me.

  41. Oh I love these!! So easy and how cute! I might have to see if I can do this! ;)

  49. "Me and some of my blog friends"
Someday when you have the inclination, please write a blog on why people say "me" when they mean "I". I apologize for interupting your blog on the painted jars, but you write so well, I just had to ask!
Also, while you are at it, maybe you could explain why it has become ok to use "like" for "as" and end every declarative sentence by raising the voice to indicate a question. I know language changes with time, but this seems generational, and I want to make sure it isn't just me!
Loved the painted jars and want to try that soon. Thanks for your really innovative thoughts, and keep writing!

  50. My grandchildren are going to be visiting next month and I think this is an exceptional project for us to do together!! I too have Prego jars, as well as others, and I can't wait to try this!! And you can find Mason jars at grocery stores this time of year. It's canning season.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Cool idea. I have a couple mason jars, but I thought I'd use some other jars (spaghetti sauce, maraschino cherry, relish, etc) just for different sizes and shapes.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Pretty Neat,I must say. I think I'm going to have to put this on my TO DO list after I save some Prego jars, or some sort of jar. I must say I like your jars better than a mason jar. Mason jars just don't have the same pazazz. GOOD JOB!

  53. Oh I love the stuff Anthro uses to decorate. I usually stare awkwardly at their fantastic paper creations trying to figure out how they made them! Thanks for sharing this!

  54. Anthropologie has so many great ideas in their displays. Love that you were able to run home and recreate it and get the smile of approval. Nice work.

  64. Awesome! I was a display intern at Anthropologie, but I began working there after they'd already made these jars. I admired them all summer and I decided to finally give it a whirl! Yours are great! And for future reference, I found my jars at Michael's!
