seeing green.

My headline may be misleading …

… you may be lulled into thinking this post is about how to make money blogging.

And maybe, to a small extent, this post will touch on that.  Just a bit. A little bit.
And that little bit may be in a round-about kind of way.

But the green I’m talking about is the envy kind.  That old green-eyed-monster nemesis …

As a blogger with less than a year under my belt, I’ve read over and over how you shouldn’t compare your blog to others ...

... how you shouldn’t pour over the numbers …

... the pageviews.  The daily, weekly, monthly visitors.

And how you shouldn’t wonder why ‘this blog’ or ‘that blog’ has more followers.  Or more email subscribers.  Or more comments on their posts.  Or more sponsors on their sidebar …

… because, seriously, isn’t your (read: my) blog so much more fabulous?

But come on. Let’s face it.  How could you not wonder why?  When it’s oh so easy to access the numbers …

… curse you Google Analytics!
(and read that envisioning me looking up at the sky with my fist held high in the air)

And then you (read: me) open up an Etsy shop.  And what do you find?  A whole new set of numbers.  Shop visits … and sales … and positive reviews … and circles … and treasuries …

And once again you find yourself in the deep end surrounded by a whole new set of much more experienced swimmers …

… and you're paddling hard to stay afloat …

... paddling for your life.

And marveling at your fellow deep enders as they oh so effortlessly swim by.

Like Ann at Sutton Place Designs

This lady has one mean backstroke.

Olympic level.

Gold medal worthy.

Seriously, she hand sews pillows that should be stocked on the shelves at Pottery Barn …

Blue Ticking Decorative Pillow Cover 20 x 20 Vintage button closure

Hand made, made-to-order pillows that should grace the cover of the Ballard Designs catalogue

Vintage Grain Sack Decorative Pillow Cover Red stripes 20 x 20

Hand made, made-to-order, open to custom order pillows that should be prominently featured in Southern Living and Country Living and Martha Stewart magazine photo shoots …

Brown and Ivory Chevron Pillow Cover 12 x 16

And Ann is not just hand made made to order custom pillows …

sutton_place_table-runners-and-tote-bags-from-vintage-grain-sacks

… can we talk table runners … and tea towels … and vintage grain sack ipad covers?

And now for that round-about why ‘I’m-seeing-green-that-has-nothing-to-do-with-envy’ part of this post …

… you see, Ann has so generously signed on to be my first blog Sponsor.

I’m honored.

And humbled.

As I paddle away in the deep end …

… trying to keep my head above water.

P.S.  Ann is more than just her fabulous Etsy.  She has a fabulous blog too where she shares her amazing home diy …

  1. Yay! for you for getting a sponsor! That's awesome! (And I just wouldn't be me if I didn't reiterate that "comparison is the thief of joy." Teddy Roosevelt. And his head is on a mountain. So he must be right.)

  2. Congrats! I remember when Mom started getting sponsors - she is still excited over every one. Your blog is quite awesome in itself - don't worry about anyone else. Emulating another blog is a fast way to lose followers. Be yourself!

  3. Oh Linda...I so feel your pain! I struggle with exactly the same things on a daily basis. Lately I have been trying to just tunnel-vision my way through the days and weeks. The one thing I'm doing that seems to be helping is setting realistic goals. Then...when I achieve one it sort of makes my day. When I first opened my Etsy I was all over the place. You came out of the gate with a fresh specialty and clever niche. Well done on that. I am so glad we met. I am even more glad to sponsor your blog. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this post.

  7. Congrats on the sponsor!! I agree that it is easyto get caught up in the numbers. I don't look too often just for that reason. And yes, to answer your question, your blog IS more fabulous. ;)

  8. Yes Ann is a talented designer. I have one of her pillow covers and am very pleased with it. Your pillows are also unique. Give it time and you will also be selling up a storm. I also have an etsy acct and I sell quilts. I'm a quilter. I have sold a few but that has never discouraged me. It's fun and that's all I want out of it.

  9. There is one thing I've learned this past year that has made me relax about blogging and that is to stop comparing myself to anyone else (it was making me CRAZY!!!)

Love your blog Linda and I love Ann's as well, you each have your own style and panache and the blogging world is better for it!

  10. Oh- You have found a wonderful sponsor there, Linda. She is ONE talented lady...and I am so happy that her Etsy has been so successful. It is hard out in Blogland. I just keep slogging along and talking about not much of anything. The fact that people follow me and write me comments never ceases to amaze me. I still can't believe it. I don't sell anything, I don't advertise anything. I don't even make sense half the time and, yet, all these wonderful friends keep popping by.

Hang in there! You are doing a great job and it will just into place as you go. Blessings- xo Diana

  12. Just keep swimmning, just keep swimming...you are like Dory from Nemo, and yes, most of my references come from having a 4 year old :). Looks like Ann, in my eyes, is as talented as you are. Her pillows are lovely, much like yours. She seems like the perfect sponsor to have.

  14. I have 22 followers Linda. Lol. But boy will I be excited when I have 23. Oooo, and I got my first negative comment - that was a milestone! Whoever you're looking up to, know there's people WAY behind looking up to YOU. that's me:)

  18. I wonder if I opened a real life "Etsy" store front in my old building, stocked by my favorite stuff like Linda's pillows, if folks would come buy them?

And I agree she has a wonderful etsy shop!!! :) Ohhh and I HATE the number counting and wondering why your blog is SLOWLY growing when others have booming blogs... TRUST ME!!!! But just know that your blog is wonderful and growing quickly and it is NEVER all about the numbers!
