Enjoy!
When I committed myself to having a page on Facebook – the first in my immediate family, I might add, the crazy, headstrong, trailblazer that I am known far and wide to be – one of the first posts I was asked to create was from high school friends who asked that I list 25 things about myself that others might be surprised or interested to know.
Like all other things on Facebook, this was an exercise in asking oneself, “What do people really care about?” balanced against, “What do I want to share?”, balanced yet again against, “When do the statutes of limitations run out in certain Midwestern states?” Can we add a third scale to Themis, Lady Justice?
Number one on my list of items that other people might want to read about me was, and I quote: “I believe there is hardly anything better than listening to the Cubs game on the radio on a warm summer night.” (There were many more in the list about how much I enjoy my wife and children and dog, but let’s just go with this entry for now, please.)
Most of the time I listen to the Cubs games on the radio on the back porch while making or after dinner, on the screened-in back porch. The tinny AM sound on a humid evening takes me back to my childhood, when my father would listen to the Cubs in his own backyard.
Me, as an adult? I was content to sit on a white plastic lawn chair at a round table with a cold, sweating Budweiser in front of me. I didn’t pay attention to the coolers, brooms, and odds and ends that I had accumulated around the perimeter of our nice porch. Paints a pretty picture, don’t it?
So when Linda said she was going to upgrade the back porch, my first worry wasn’t, “How much?”, it was, “Not when the Cardinals are in town!” Turns out she gave us storage space, bright pillows, hooks to hold the kids’ summer towels and more substantial chairs with actual comfortable cushions on their seats.
It looks and feels like an additional outdoor space for more than one baseball fan drinking beer. Imagine that!
The seat cushions are a must for Cubs fans come mid-summer, when our hopes, and our rear ends, come back to Earth. Until next year.
Listened to the cubbies as a child!! Good job on the porch!!

I could not stop laughing when I read this post. This is totally my husband. He grills or sits by the fire listening to the Reds game on his little am radio. It is summer, our home and it warms my heart. Now do you go as far to bring a tv to the deck light a fire and watch football, if so your husband knows mine!
